The parent document and cornerstone of the Z136 series of laser safety standards, the ANSI Z136.1 is the foundation of laser safety programs for industrial, military, medical, and educational applications nationwide.
As a result of advances in laser devices and applications, new guidelines to address these changes were incorporated in the revised ANSI Z136.1 (2000). Some of the changes include revisions to the maximum permissible exposures (MPEs) tables, methods by which hazard evaluation and laser classifications are calculated and determined for ocular exposure to small (intrabeam) viewing as well as extended source viewing, guidance on ultrashort pulse laser safety, and methodology of dealing with viewing small and extended sources. There are sections on laser pointers, new sign designs, and harmonization with IEC recognizing 2000 classification additions Class 1M, Class 2M, and Class 3R along with the ramifications of these changes on the present classification scheme.
In addition to the changes, the standard covers laser safety, non-beam hazards, administrative/engineering control measures, LSOs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), employee education/training, eye exams, definitions, optical density, nominal hazard zone (NHZ), MPEs, accessible emission limit (AEL), bio-effects, and example calculations. (soft bound, 184 pgs.)
