Coherent Launches Cost-Effective Green 532 nm Optically Pumped Semiconductor Lasers (OPSL) for Bioinstrumentation

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Coherent, Inc. has expanded their Sapphire™ family of compact CW visible lasers with 532 nm (green) lasers based on the company’s unique OPSL technology.  Two models of the Sapphire 532 are being offered with a choice of either 200 mW or 300 mW output.  As with other Sapphire lasers, these new 532 nm lasers provide a high quality TEM00 output beam characterized by low noise (0.25% rms).  Their combination of compact packaging (125 mm x 70 mm x 34 mm) and low power consumption translates into easier integration and lower cost of ownership for OEM instrument builders.  Plus these Sapphire 532 lasers have the same form, fit and function as existing Sapphire LP series lasers at other wavelengths such as 460 nm, 488 nm, 514 nm, 561 nm and 568 nm, simplifying incorporation of this new wavelength into existing instrument platforms. LIA to Present Dr. Steven Chu, US Secretary of Energy, with 2010 Arthur L. Schawlow Award

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The Laser Institute of America (LIA) will present U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu with the 2010 Arthur L. Schawlow Award at the 29th International Congress on Applications of Lasers and Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) in Anaheim, Calif.

Chu, co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light, will receive the honor during a luncheon Sept. 29 and speak during the event. Laser pioneer Schawlow nominated Chu for the Nobel while the two were colleagues at Stanford University. Chu will receive a silver medal, a special citation and a cash prize, and become a fellow and lifetime member of LIA. (more…)

LIA to Award Dr. Charles Townes with Lifetime Achievement Award

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The Laser Institute of America (LIA) will present its first Lifetime Achievement Award to laser pioneer Dr. Charles Townes at the 29th International Congress on Applications of Lasers and Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) in Anaheim, Calif.

Townes, 94, won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1964 “for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle,” according to the Nobel committee. The then-provost and professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shared the award with Nicolay Basov and Aleksandr Prokhorov of the USSR. Their work was among the critical early steps in the development of the laser, which is 50 years old this year.
